THE GOTTMAN METHODWayview Christian Counseling draws on the principles of the Gottman Method, developed through 40 years of research by psychologists Drs. John and Julie Gottman. The Method grew out of the careful study of thousands of couples, identifying the patterns for building happy, healthy marriages.

FAITH & RESEARCH
Wayview Christian Counseling walks couples through the Gottman framework through a pastoral rather than clinical lens.
While the method is built on secular, objective research, the faith-based parallels are striking. Much of what Gottman discovered in the lab matches what the Word of God has been telling us about love and marriage all along.

What the Bible has been telling us about love and marriage all along
Recognizing the method's consistency with biblical principles, Psychologist Dr. David Penner, then Clinical Director of The Gottman Institute, authored the Biblical Reference Guide for the Gottman Method. While the research describes the patterns; Scripture and pastoral care give them their grounding.
Sound science, settled faith
GOTTMAN TOOLS
Stephen has completed training in Gottman Level 1, Level 2, and Treating Affairs and Trauma through The Gottman Institute, and is an Approved Member of Gottman Connect, which opens the door to two powerful tools that help couples reach more meaningful results in fewer sessions.

The Gottman Relationship Checkup
The Relationship Checkup is a comprehensive assessment giving precise insight into the specific strengths and challenges of your relationship. Rather than spend early sessions hunting for the real issues, we begin already knowing where to focus, which means the work moves faster and lands where it counts.

The Gottman Relationship Builder
The Relationship Builder is an online platform designed to teach the principles, build new skills, and allow you to practice with your spouse. It is made up of 13 modules, 90 videos, and 35 exercises. Wayview assigns modules to complete at home, significantly reducing time in session.

Each of these tools incurs an additional fee. If cost is a barrier to adopting them, Stephen would be happy to talk through options to make them accessible for you.
While Gottman is a primary lens for Wayview's couples work, it is not the only one. Stephen also leans on other models and on the wisdom of Scripture as he walks with each couple through their own season.
